Discover A Gem - Pearl

What is a Pearl ?

Pearls are unique organic gemstones, naturally created inside shellfish like oysters and mussels. When a foreign object, such as a grain of sand, irritates the shellfish, it secretes layers of nacre to protect itself. Over time, this process gradually forms a pearl. Primarily composed of calcium carbonate, pearls can vary in colour and quality due to trace elements present during formation.

How Pearls are Formed ?

Pearls are the only gemstones in the world created by living organisms, whether in freshwater or saltwater environments. The process begins with a ‘mother oyster’ or ‘mother shell.’ When a tiny irritant, like a grain of sand, enters the oyster, it attempts to expel it. When these attempts fail, the oyster starts secreting layers of nacre, gradually coating the irritant. Over time, this process transforms the grain into a smooth, lustrous pearl.

The main component of pearls is nacre, known for its brilliant lustre and ability to refract light. The thin layers of nacre give pearls their radiant, captivating glow, making them one of nature’s most beautiful gems.

Freshwater pearls are produced by river mussels and are primarily farmed in Japan and China. On the other hand, cultured pearls are created by saltwater pearl oysters and are predominantly farmed in the oceans surrounding the Philippines, Australia, and French Polynesia. The variety in location, along with the type of mollusc used, results in the beautiful range of hues found in pearls, offering a stunning selection of colours for this organic gemstone.
